Benefits of hiring an art advisor for an outdoor sculpture
The process of acquiring and installing an outdoor sculpture requires careful planning and clients would benefit from the expertise provided by an art advisor. This post outlines the journey of acquiring a bronze sculpture titled "Joyful Empowerment" by artist Angela Mia for a client’s home overlooking the San Francisco Bay. The logistics involved in handling such a project emphasize the importance of hiring an art advisor to facilitate the selection, coordination and installation of the artwork, ultimately saving time and effort for the client.

The journey began with an understanding of the client’s needs and preferences. After spending time listening to her vision, I presented the client with a curated list of artworks sourced from my extensive network. One crucial consideration in selecting a sculpture is its scale, which can significantly impact the visual harmony of the space. To aid in this decision, I created digital renders that allowed the client to visualize how the sculpture would look in her environment. After careful deliberation and consultation with her family, the client ultimately decided on "Joyful Empowerment."
Once the artwork was selected, the next step involved a site survey conducted by an art handling company. This assessment was essential to evaluate accessibility and determine the best method for installing the sculpture. Given the hilltop property and the curving path leading to the installation site, it was clear that a crane would be necessary to maneuver the sculpture into position. The logistics of installing a sculpture of this scale and dimension require precision and expertise, particularly in an earthquake-prone location.
The sculpture was manufactured in a foundry located in Texas and transported to an art storage facility in San Francisco. Upon arrival, a condition report was performed to ensure that the artwork had not sustained any damage during transit. The crate, weighing 850 pounds, was well padded with supporting struts; however, there was slight damage to the patina in a few areas due to rubbing from the packaging material. These areas were documented, and coordination for repairs with a conservator was scheduled to touchup the patina.

The installation process itself presented additional logistical challenges. The installation crew encountered metal rebars and sand under the concrete platform, which slowed their progress. The entire installation took approximately six hours, highlighting the need for careful planning and coordination among experienced installation teams to ensure safety and accuracy.

Post-installation maintenance is another consideration in the acquisition of outdoor sculptures. Once the sculpture is installed, ongoing care is necessary to ensure its longevity and preservation. Hiring a reputable conservator is vital to maintain the artwork's integrity over time.
In conclusion, the logistics involved in the acquisition and installation of outdoor sculptures are complex. From assessing site accessibility and arranging transportation to coordinating installation efforts, each step requires meticulous planning and execution. By addressing these considerations, art advisors can facilitate a successful installation that enhances the beauty and enjoyment of the artwork for years to come. The entire process for "Joyful Empowerment" spanned approximately seven months, underscoring the importance of coordination among various teams to achieve a smooth execution. This journey not only resulted in the successful installation of a remarkable piece of art but also enriched the client’s space with a joyous sculpture.
